eSIM vs International Roaming from the UAE

How travel eSIMs and UAE operator roaming packs actually differ — and how to work out which one costs you less on your next trip.

The core difference

Roaming keeps your UAE number and uses your operator's own travel package or per-megabyte rates. A travel eSIM is a separate prepaid data plan from an international provider, added as a second line on your phone.

The practical distinction is cost control. A travel eSIM is paid up front with a fixed allowance, so it cannot generate a surprise bill. Roaming is billed by your operator after the fact unless you have activated a capped travel pack.

How to compare the two fairly

Open your operator's app and find the travel pack for your destination: note the price, the data allowance and how many days it lasts. Then look at the same destination page here and compare against a plan with a similar allowance and validity in AED.

We deliberately do not publish UAE operator roaming prices because they change frequently and vary by plan and tariff. Your own app is the only accurate source for your line.

When roaming still makes more sense

Roaming is the better option when you must receive calls and SMS on your UAE number at local rates, when you are away for only a day or two, or when your operator bundles free roaming with your existing plan.

Using both together

Most travellers use both: the UAE line stays on for calls and OTPs with data roaming disabled, and the eSIM carries all data. That combination keeps you reachable without roaming data charges.

FAQs

Will I still receive bank OTPs abroad?

Yes, as long as your UAE SIM remains enabled. SMS delivery while roaming does not require mobile data, so you can keep data roaming switched off on that line.
