How to install an eSIM on iPhone & Android

A step-by-step walkthrough for activating a travel eSIM before you fly to Dubai — including the settings people always miss.

Before you buy

Two things must be true: your handset supports eSIM, and it is carrier-unlocked. Almost every iPhone from XS onwards, Google Pixel 3 onwards, and Samsung Galaxy S20 onwards qualifies. Dial *#06# — if you see an EID number, your phone is eSIM capable.

Installing on iPhone

Install while you still have Wi-Fi at home, not after landing at DXB.

  • Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM
  • Choose 'Use QR Code' and scan the code from your provider email
  • Label the plan 'Travel' so you can tell it apart from your home line
  • Turn Data Roaming ON for the travel line — this is required and does not cost extra
  • Leave your home line active for calls, set the travel line as Cellular Data

Installing on Android

Menu names vary slightly by manufacturer, but the flow is the same.

  • Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM / Download a SIM instead
  • Scan the QR code and confirm the download
  • Set the travel eSIM as the default mobile data SIM
  • Enable roaming on the travel SIM only

If it does not connect

Toggle airplane mode, then manually select the network operator (e& or du in the UAE) instead of automatic selection. If you still have no data, check the APN value supplied by your provider.
